One Room Challenge Fall 2019 - Week 6 - The Guest Bedroom Reveal

*This post made possible by the lovely sponsors of the One Room Challenge. Of course, my opinions expressed in my blog are my own :)

FINALLY the guest bedroom is complete! It’s been a fun and fulfilling 6 weeks with no major hiccups other than the fact that I wasn’t able to get a lot of the original stuff I was planning on getting due to those items not being available. That lead me to have to change my design just a bit which also made me nervous.  I ended up doubting myself more than a few times, thinking “is this gonna work..? Am I going to be able to pull this room all together..? Do I... suck…?” There’s absolutely no doubt that the creative process is an emotional roller coaster. It always is for me. One day I can be so “high” on my own confidence seeing how beautiful something I'm creating is coming together, and then the next day I may add another element to my design that doesn’t work and all that confidence comes crashing down and turns into self-doubt. In the end, every project has always ended beautiful and this guest bedroom is no exception!

Before we take a tour of the new guest bedroom, let’s take a walk down memory lane and revisit the last 5 weeks to really appreciate the “after”.

The first week is where it all began. I chose the lucky room that would get the makeover and assessed it’s current situation and shared my dreams and aspiration for that hot mess of a room.

The second week consisted mostly of brainstorming and collecting ideas. I created a floorplan and moodboard to see if everything would work together

The third week was all about choosing paint color. I narrowed it down to 6 shades of warm grays

The fourth week marked the beginning of the transformation. The chosen paint color and wallpaper went up!

The fifth week was all about the bed! I shared my tips to creating the coziest bed ever!

Today is the 6th and final week of the One Room Challenge which is the week everyone waits for. The REVEAL!

My goal for this guest bedroom was to create an inviting, cozy spot for guests to not only sleep in at the end of the day, but also to be a place for guests to hang out in when they need a bit of alone time. That meant to me that I had to create a seating area for two, and of course the room HAD to have a fireplace! When I talked about my plans to my family, they thought I was crazy to think I could fit a fireplace AND seating area in such a modestly-sized bedroom but that’s why it’s so important to choose the right size furniture and these swivel club chairs from Homepop were perfect. The chairs are deep enough to sit comfortably in but also take up less space because of their smaller, streamlined arms and back. The modern silhouette of the chairs look great against the traditional style of my mahogany fireplace (a sixty dollar offer-up find, thank you very much!) If these club chairs had big, rolled arms and back, there would be no way they would have fit in this space. Apart from-space saving, these chairs swivel which means they can be moved around based on you wanna look at -the TV or the beautiful  bed.

You can find a similar fireplace HERE

The beautiful tufted wingback upholstered bed is the perfect combination of traditional and modern which is why it works so well in this room. The bed and chairs are both from HomePop Furniture and all of their furniture have that same traditional/transitional style with a modern twist. Aside from their style, Homepop furniture is affordable and the quality is pretty good! The bed and chairs both feel very solid and the quality of the fabric feels great.

Since the bed is the most important thing in a bedroom, I wanted to make sure that I got the best bedding possible from the actual bed and mattress to the bedding. If you read my week 5 post where I share my tips on creating a cozy bed then you know how crazy I am about the bedding I chose from Garnet Hill. I love the casual vibe the french linen sheets and duvet cover give the room but still look pulled together and classic.  Garnet Hill literally had everything I needed to build a beautiful bed. I went all out with linen sheets,  down pillows and comforter and even a silk and cotton blend blanket. HEAVENLY!

All this luxury set atop the MOST COMFORTABLE mattress I have EVER felt from Tuft and Needle! My guests are never gonna leave, LOL.

The most comfortable mattress I've ever laid on! From Tuft and Needle.
Another great piece of furniture I added to the guest bedroom were these vintage nightstands I found on Facebook Marketplace. As soon as I saw them I knew they were going to be perfect for the room. They are in great condition and only cost me $80 for the pair! Score!

Once I had all the furniture in place it was time to give the room some personality with accessories and you know I love to accessorize! I have very strong opinions about accessorizing a room especially when it comes to the holy trinity of accessories:

Why are these 3 things so important, you ask? Because they give a room depth. Without these 3 things, a room feels like a box. Everything looks flat. Everything looks temporary. Without art, lighting and curtains, your home will look like you're either just moving in or getting ready to move out. If you don't know where to find a good assortment of accessories don't fret! I got you! You can shop for all these things in the comfort of your own home. I ordered all my art, lighting and curtains online and got them in less than a week which is important because A: I tend to be a bit impatient and 2 πŸ˜‰: gas is almost $5 a gallon around here and nobody wants to be driving around town wasting fuel in hopes of finding the perfect accessories!

A great place to find curtains is Spoonflower because they have a crazy amount of options which means you get stuff that is pretty much custom-made without the hefty price tag. For instance, the pattern I chose for my curtains (Stripes Grunge Pencil Charcoal Black and White by caja_design) can be printed on just about anything. I could have gotten the pattern printed in wallpaper, bedding, napkins, throw blankets, pillows and all kinds of stuff. You can also order your print on different kinds of fabric too.  You just find a pattern you love and you can get it printed on velvet, cotton, canvas, chiffon, jersey and the list goes on!  I ordered two curtain panels in 96"  length in cotton canvas  plus I ordered some additional fabric in cypress cotton to make a valance for the small window on the right.

For art, I HIGHLY recommend Minted. They have tons of art to choose from that are created by real artists. These limited edition prints can be ordered in different sizes and can also be ordered with or without frames and/or mats. I ordered all of my prints with a gold frame, some with mats and some without. Just a personal preference :) I actually feel like the room could use a lot more pieces of art, but I definitely want a collected look in the room so I'll be adding more pieces every now and then when I come across a piece of art that I'm drawn to.

Just like art can set the mood in a space, lighting does as well and I also have very strong opinions about lighting. First of all, try not to use fluorescent lights inside the home cuz it makes your home look like a giant refrigerator. Just sayin'.  Look, I'm a very open-minded guy and I will love you and accept you for who you are, but I also love you enough to not let you live with bad decorating decisions πŸ˜†.  A few softly lit shaded lamps what give off warm, diffused light just makes a room look soooo good! Have you ever checked out Lamps Plus? I'm sure you at least heard of them! They have everything. E-VERY-THING. I didn't go crazy with the lighting since this is a bedroom but I did add a cool arc lamp for some overhead lighting above the seating area. I didn't include a pendant light installation in my plans so I ended up ordering this arc lamp from Lamps Plus which I think works perfectly.

I can't WAIT to turn on the fireplace and have a warm welcoming space for my guests! But first, I gotta try the room out myself!

Thanks so much for following along during these last 6 weeks. I really do feel fortunate to be a featured designer of the One Room Challenge. I want to sincerely thank Linda Weinstein , Better Homes and Gardens Magazine and all of the One Room Challenge official sponsors for this amazing opportunity. All the sponsors were fast to respond and ship, eager and generous. I also want to thank my amazing mom who came out to help me and always makes me feel like anything is possible πŸ’š
