One Room Challenge Fall 2019 - Week 4 - Painting the Room "Rustic Taupe" and "Park Avenue"
Welcome to week 4 of the One Room Challenge! Here's a recap of the previous 3 weeks in case you need to catch up:
This week I worked on painting the walls and putting up the wallpaper.
If you watched my stories on Instagram then you already know what a pain it was to hang up the wallpaper. It wasn't hard, it was just a slow, tedious, precise process that I have NO patience for! There's also very little room for error. Once you make a mistake, it's difficult to fix. One mistake I made when hanging the wallpaper was that I somehow measured incorrectly and the first panel I put up ended up being too short! I didn't want to waste the wallpaper so instead of throwing out the panel that was too short, I just ended up cutting a small piece of wallpaper and added it to the bottom. The good news is that it will be covered with the side table and not only that, you can't even tell that I had to add that missing piece! Happy ending! I only wallpapered one wall with 6 panels of wallpaper and that took me as much time as it did to paint the whole dang room! NEVER again will I be tackling putting up wallpaper by myself! I definitely needed the help of someone who is more detailed than me and doesn't mind working at a snails pace.
Oops! Wallpaper hanging didn't start on the right foot! |
But in the end it came out looking decent :) |
Fortunately, painting the room was a lot easier! Plus, my Mom volunteered to come help me paint which I was so grateful for! We had such a great time getting the painting done even though my Mom was nervous about me painting the wallpaper. She was trying to talk me into leaving it white. You gotta trust my vision, Mom!
The wallpaper in white is definitely beautiful, but looked a little too "precious" . I want a bit more moodiness to the room. |
Out of the 6 paint colors I sampled, I ended up choosing 2 different colors for the bedroom. My first choice was the popular vote on Instagram -Rustic Taupe by Behr Paint. I absolutely love how that color looks on the wallpapered accent wall but it looked a bit too dark for the rest of the room. You see, the accent wall where the wallpaper is gets a lot of light compared to the rest of the room. So what I did to balance out the light in the room was to paint the accent wall in Rustic Taupe and the rest of the room in "Park Avenue" by Behr which is slightly lighter. I think it worked! Using the two colors in the room gave me the saturation I wanted in the wallpaper without darkening the entire room.

Having the two tones makes sense. The brightest wall in the room can take the darker paint color. |
I have tons of experience painting; so much that I don't even use painter's tape anymore! But nothing beats having the right tools to make the job easier. These paint pails that we used to cut into our walls felt so much more secure compared to a flimsy disposable container we usually use! Or even worse, climbing up and down a ladder with the paint can! đŸ˜“ The paint pails have a secure handle to put your hand in AND a little magnetic strip to hold your brush while you're moving your ladder. ME LIKEY! It really is the little things... :)
my Mom, always willing to help me out :) |
This little paint pail from HANdy Paint really made painting the edges and corners a lot easier :) |
We ended up finishing the whole room in just a few hours! It helped that we used Behr Marquee paint for the whole room, including the baseboards. The Marquee line of paint has amazing coverage which meant that we were able to skip priming AND a second coat and that saved us like 4 hours, I'm sure! I've used Behr Marquee in all the bedrooms and bathrooms in our home because it's also easy to clean -even in the flat finish. With two kids and a dog, that's very important :)
I am super thankful for my parents who came over to help, for my wife who did a great job painting the window sills AND cooked up an amazing dinner! I'm also thankful for our One Room Challenge official sponsor,s Behr Paint and HANdy Paint Tools! * Of course, the reviews and opinions expressed in this post are my own and from my personal experience with the products :) if you have any questions about any of the products used, just ask! I'm here for you!
Now that the walls are done, I feel really good! The hard part is pretty much OVER! I'm just waiting for a couple pieces of furniture to arrive and after that it's all about the icing on the cake... the accessories!
Next Wednesday (if all goes as planned) I'm going to be teaching you how to make the most perfect, most comfortable, most beautiful-looking bed! SO, if you haven't signed up to receive my blog updates via email, do so now!
'Till next time!
-Oscar
