Teen Bedroom Makeover with Green Walls

After painting, then REPAINTING I'm happy to say... this room is DONE.

If you've been following my stories on Instagram then you probably know that I've been working on making over my daughters bedroom and that there was major DRAMA with the leaves I stenciled on her walls. After a whole day painting, then a whole night stenciling 'till about 1 in the morning, my wife came into the room the next morning SCREAMING at me telling me I had to paint over the leaves because my palmetto leaves stencil looked like marijuana plants!! WTF?! NOW YOU TELL ME!?

I wanted to leave it because I loved the stencil so much, but I couldn't unsee it. Also, my daughter wasn't too fond of the palmetto leaves either as she really wanted all-green walls. It was one of the saddest days of my life. You should have seen how happy I was when I finished stenciling. I thought it looked amazing. Until someone came along and ruined it for me...

I thought that maybe adding the furniture and bedding would help soften the marijuana look...

I GUESS I'M PAINTING AGAIN!

We chose a beautiful green color called "Bermuda Grass" by Behr and I actually think it was a great choice to go with an all-green color on the walls. I feel it really elevates the look. I admit, I think it was a good idea to go with the green. It's beautiful.

LETS TALK ABOUT HOW I PLANNED THIS MAKEOVER

My daughter's cute yellow room was definitely ready for a change. Not only was her room no longer functional, my style has changed since she was a baby and I wanted this room to reflect my current design aesthetic.

her little writing desk :( Beautiful, but too small to house all her electronics. I'm going to miss it.

I HAVE BEEN PREPARING FOR THIS MAKEOVER FOR ABOUT 8 MONTHS

The ball started rolling on this project about 8 or 9 months ago when I came across a beautiful leopard print duvet from the Emily and Meritt collection for Pottery Barn. Not only did I love the style, it was on clearance so the price was great! I decided to pull the trigger and make the commitment to have this duvet as the starting point to my daughter's bedroom.

My love for mixing patterns runs deep! Keep patterns from feeling crazy by sticking only a couple of colors

REDECORATING A ROOM CAN ADD UP. I DIDN'T WANT TO FEEL THE DENT IN MY WALLET ALL AT ONCE.

I decided that I was going to wait to purchase things when I came across items that would fit the style I was going for AND would be selling at a bargain price. I wasn't in a hurry so this way of redecorating really felt stress-free. I would find an item, purchase it if the price was right, and just put it away until I had everything I needed. When I was ready to make over the room, all I had to buy was paint and supplies!

Crazy about these bamboo style side tables! Found them on clearance!. They're actually console tables but you know me, I like BIG nightstands.

ITS EASY TO LOSE FOCUS WHEN DESIGNING A ROOM AND THAT'S WHY I USE PINTEREST

I was scared that I would lose focus of what I wanted the room to look like as time went by. I stayed on track by creating a Pinterest board to help me with my vision. Pinterest boards not only help me by saving items I'm interested in, they also help me see how everything would look together. Kind of like a mood board. If you haven't used Pinterest to help you decorate rooms, I strongly suggest you do!

MY DAUGHTER WAS AN AWESOME CLIENT!

Her main concerns where to have a work space large enough to accommodate her PC, XBOX game console and her TV. Also, to have a surface to house Juanito, her leopard gecko. As far as style goes, her only two requests were green walls and for the space not to look "little kid-ish" Aside from that, I could do whatever I wanted! The look I was going for was a sort of jungle-y traveled look with a young-contemporary twist. My daughter LOVES animals so I found this style to be perfect for her. Also, the color scheme of green, black and white along with the warm wood tones and traveled, eclectic vibe of her room totally makes sense with my style and what is going on in the rest of our home.

Two person desk offers tons of space for gaming and homework

Going with a console table instead of a traditional nightstand gave us room to fit Juanito's tank. My daughter did such an amazing job decorating his home. Looks like a little jungle.

One of the obstacles I came across is the placement of the bed. Initially I thought of putting the desk in front of the window but I didn't want the work station to be the first thing you see when you walk into the room. The only other option that made sense was to put the bed in front of the window and have the desk adjacent to the bed on the opposite wall.

HAVING A BED PLACED IN FRONT OF A WINDOW IS A MAJOR DESIGN NO-NO!

Not only does it look weird to obstruct a window with furniture, it also feels a bit weird to sleep directly under a window. Bad Feng Shui or something. My answer to all this was to create a cocoon like effect in her bedroom by completely covering the window with a wall of curtains.

The curtains still let light in and cast a beautiful, soft glow inside the room. We can also draw them open if we want to let additional light or air in the room. I went with 4 panels of 96" curtains to add dramatic height to the room and I think that really elevates the look even though the curtains were only $40 for a set of two at Home Goods. Score! The 96" length was important because to create that curtain wall effect, I needed to hang them all the way up to the ceiling. Plus, I always love hanging my curtains high.

THE HIGHER THE CURTAINS, THE CLOSER TO GOD

Create a luxurious, full effect by using 4 curtain panels instead of 2 and extend them past the width of the actual window.

Interested in anything you see in the room? I have the items linked below. Some items are no longer available, so I tried to link similar items that can help you achieve the same look :)

I don't think I'm quite done with the bedroom though, because I'm thinking of adding a chandelier, changing the headboard, adding some more art and maybe some shelves above the desk area. For now, it's functional and looks great. Both my daughter and I (and my wife) love how the room turned out! I have an additional beautiful room in my home that I'm proud of and my daughter has everything she needs including a large 2 person desk that fits all her gaming stuff along with room to do her homework. Oh, and she even has a special spot for Juanito 💚

Thanks for visiting! 'Till next time!
