Updating our Master Bath with NO Budget for Demolition

When we first bought our home in 2007 the very first thing I did was to paint the master bath. I remember that day vividly. I was the only one in the house and I was so eager to add a personal touch to our new home. I had never painted walls in my life so this was a first for me. Seeing it now I think I did a pretty good job painting that bathroom. It took me all day and all night. I remember it was so tedious and time consuming to paint such a small space. I had to squeeze my brush into every little nook and cranny while making sure I wouldn't get  paint where there shouldn't be any. We went bold and chose a beautiful turquoise color that at that time complimented the color scheme in our master bedroom. Since that day, the master bathroom hasn't changed.

I kept putting off making any changes to our master bath because 1, bathroom remodels are expensive and 2, I didn't want to invest any time or money into that bathroom if it wasn't going to end up looking like my "dream bathroom".

Now, 13 years later we finally got sick of that turquoise paint and builder grade fixtures that we decided to not wait any longer and thought that even making only cosmetic changes to our bathroom -even if we just painted the damn walls a different color; that that alone would be a huge upgrade!

I think that we really got motivated to change the bathroom after completing our master bedroom refresh. A few months ago I made some small but VERY impactful changes to our master bedroom that really pumped up the style in there.  Now  when I step in to our refreshed bedroom, that fugly bathroom sticks out like a sore thumb. Even MORE than before!

We are taking the same principle we used to update our bedroom to give our master bath a mini makeover. Changing only cosmetic things without having to knock anything down or tearing anything out will keep costs low while still managing to meet our goal of having a decent-looking master bathroom that also speaks to my style.

My goals for this bathroom are to:

Paint walls

Replace flooring

Replace or frame mirror

Replace light fixtures

Replace faucets

Add wallpaper or tile backsplash

Add new bathroom hardware

Replace shower & tub fixtures

Stain or paint existing cabinets

Add accessories

Like I previously mentioned, we want to keep the cost low so we aren't planning on tearing anything out. That means no "dream bathroom" with a walk-in shower and a beautiful fluted glass partition, and no marble counters with an ogee edge above a vintage mahogany dresser refurbished as a vanity in front of a backsplash of a seamless black marble slab with some gorgeous white veining going on.

One day...

But why should I wait for perfection while my eyes suffer every day looking at the state of my master bathroom? It's not worth it to me. I want to experience joy NOW, even if it means putting my big dreams on hold for a while. Making small changes NOW can still create joy for me and it feels like I get one step closer to the BIG goal. So instead of feeling crappy every time I see my bathroom, I'm going to NOW change the things I can to feel a bit of happiness because life is too short!

I'll be keeping you posted on the progress so please go ahead and subscribe to the blog so you get an email notification as to when I share something new :)

    1. Lol right!? And I know this too! I think part of it is that I hate painting bathrooms. So many little details

  2. Starting on updating my master bath with a similar scope...no walls or fixtures moving. Waiting on bids and hoping this "small" update will fit into my budget.

    1. Cool! I'm hoping for the same thing. I might have to DIY a couple things which I'm a bit nervous about because I'm not that handy 😅
